Norml News 1993/1994 Summer
Well, well, spring is already upon us. Time to dig compost into the vegetable garden and get those seedlings sown and planted.
1993 has been a good year for NORML. We have reorganisd ourselves significantly and this is continuing. Things on the political front are also looking good. We are finding more and more support in 'high places'. Our members are becoming more active and more radical. The summer campaign is looking to be a scorcher!
A major event on the horizon is the election. NORML is not in the business of supporting any political party, but for those who intend to vote my advice is to visit each candidate and ask if they support a law review. You can then vote accordingly.
Of course many people are disillusioned with the political system and refuse to vote. NORML's campaign of Non Violent Direct Action offers a way to take back control over our lives, without having to beg for scraps from our so-called representatives. I do wonder about this boycott, though, when it seems that the most reactionary politicians sit in those electorates with the most marginalised populations.
There is a story flying around that ganja has become a trillion times stronger than it used to be (superior kiwi horticultural ingenuity). Three points need to be made here. First, that North Africans have been breeding marijuana for thousands of years, and making concentrated extracts (hashish) for as long. So the claim that "it's different now" is a bit bizarre.
Second, that marijuana hasn't actually become appreciably stronger since Buddha Sticks. Ask any old hippy. Maybe the 'drug education' groups have just found themselves a better connection now?
Third, that if marijuana has become stronger, this is an advantage. Many of the health risks are from inhaling smoke. The stronger the herb, the less you smoke for the same effect. It's like alcoho l- if you drink whiskey you don't quaff it at the same rate as you would a beer.
Drug education is the focus of this issue, of course. To find out more, step right this way...
